Horticulture Program

Horticulture Program has the mission to develop and disseminate appropriate technologies of high potential productivity for horticultural crops. Its goal is to increase food security and diversify income opportunities through collaborative schemes of introduction, evaluation and distribution of improved varieties of horticultural crops associated with developed technologies.

Horticulture Centre of Excellence

The horticulture center of excellence, established at Mulindi in the City of Kigali through the cooperation between Rwanda and Israel, the center aims to strengthen the technical know-how of Rwandan researchers, extension agents and small and commercial farmers, through transfer of hands on skills among others.

Assinapol Ndereyimana (PhD)

Horticulture Program Coordinator Senior Research Fellow

Dr Assinapol Ndereyimana is the Horticulture Program Coordinator Senior Research Fellow for Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) since February 2021. He has got considerable experience in agriculture research and technology transfer. From 2009 to 2020 he has been serving RAB as a Researcher in Horticulture Program. He is also the National Focal Person for EAC Fruits and Vegetables Strategy and National Focal Person for EAC Post-Harvest Loss Management Strategy for Fruit and Vegetable Value Chains.

Dr Assinapol has been able to gain many insights in horticulture by being exposed to technologies from different countries, including India, Japan, Israel, Tanzania and Kenya; as well as by participating in several national and international conferences. Utilizing his expertise as a Farmer Field School (FFS) Master Trainer, he has been able to conduct different FFS training sessions that delivered qualified FFS Facilitators. He has published more than 20 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals, elaborated and disseminated several forms of extension materials to farmers and extension officers. His key competencies and areas of expertise include: agronomy, physiology, breeding and manipulation of crops, special horticultural practices, postharvest physiology and technology of fresh produce, integrated pest management, adult education and extension, as well as market-oriented farming.

Dr Assinapol holds PhD degree in Horticulture from Egerton University/Kenya, MSc degree in Horticulture from Tamil Nadu Agriculture University/India, and BSc degree in Crop Production from University of Rwanda. He successfully undergone through different trainings, including but no limited to: a six (6) months training course on “Market-Oriented Agriculture Promotion for Africa”, held in Japan, an Eighteen (18) months Farmer Field School Master Trainer course organized by BTC, and an induction course on management of Horticulture Centre of Excellence, held in Israel and India.
