Empowering Farmers, Transforming Communities: SAPMP’s Impact in Gisagara district

The Sustainable Agricultural Productivity and Market Linkages Project (SAPMP) is creating visible and lasting impact on farming communities in Gisagara District. Through strategic support that combines access to quality agricultural inputs, technical training, and strengthened market linkages, the project is enhancing productivity, improving household income, and fostering sustainable rural development.

By promoting modern farming techniques, SAPMP is equipping farmers with the knowledge and resources needed to increase efficiency and resilience.

In addition to agricultural inputs, SAPMP emphasizes capacity building as a cornerstone of sustainable transformation. Farmers receive training in best practices for crop production, livestock management, and financial literacy, including microfinance management. These skills empower cooperative members to make informed decisions, manage their resources effectively, and reinvest profits into expanding their agricultural enterprises.

The Abahizi-Mamba Cooperative stands as a strong example of the project’s transformative influence. With SAPMP’s support, the cooperative established a Micro Credit Fund designed to help members access essential inputs such as seeds, and other farming necessities. This initiative has enabled farmers to obtain timely financial assistance, expand their operations, and strengthen their economic resilience. According to cooperative’s leadership, the revolving fund has not only improved individual farm productivity but also reinforced solidarity and financial stability within the cooperative.

Encouraged by these gains, the cooperative has set ambitious goals for the future. It aims to increase its capital from 15 million RWF to 50 million RWF and plans to acquire a vehicle to ease produce transportation and enhance operational efficiency. Such aspirations reflect a growing confidence among members, who now see agriculture as a viable and sustainable pathway to long-term prosperity, thanks to SPAMP.

Farmers acknowledge the significant role SAPMP has played in their progress. As one member shared, the project has strengthened both the cooperative and individual farms by ensuring access to essential inputs, technical support, and consistent guidance. This support has enabled families to improve their livelihoods, invest in their children’s education, and plan for a more secure future.

Beyond individual success stories, SAPMP’s broader contribution lies in its commitment to empowering communities. By strengthening cooperatives, promoting youth engagement in agriculture, and encouraging sustainable farming practices, the project is fostering inclusive economic growth across Gisagara and surrounding districts. The results demonstrate that targeted agricultural investment, combined with capacity building and strong local partnerships, can transform rural livelihoods and lay the foundation for enduring community development.
