Ruminant Program
The ruminant programme has a two-part mission which is research and effective extension services in order to increase cattle, goats and sheep productivity along their value chains. The foci of research cum extension are on physiology, reproduction, breeding, nutrition and production systems in each animal type. Activities under the mentioned areas of research and extension, are implemented through the annual work plan based-performances in order to respond to the country priorities stipulated in national strategy for transformation (NST) in which the strategic plan for agricultural transformation (PSTA) is embedded.
In a nutshell, the ruminant programme designs research and extension activities resilient to climate change. The programme also develops and mainstreams climate smart approaches into ruminant production for increased milk and meat production while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, especially methane (CH4) from enteric fermentation and manure management, as well as nitrous oxide (N2O) from manure management. Furthermore, the ruminant program promotes crop-livestock integration systems for enhanced food and nutrition security. Additionally, the program builds capacity of farmers on adoption and use of climate resilient innovations for improved mixed crop-ruminant productivity while managing natural resource base.
