Pulses & oil crops program

The Pulses and Oil Crops Program focuses on developing legume varieties (bean, soybean, peas, groundnuts, sunflower, etc) that are high yielding, early maturing, resistant to pests and diseases, rich in iron and zinc content and market demanded.

The program also focuses on dissemination of developed technologies through establishment of field demonstration plots across the country, deliver radio talks and conduct participatory variety selection events with farmers. Furthermore, the program emphasizes on strengthening the linkages between various actors in the legume value chain as well as capacity building of all stakeholders (farmers/farmer cooperatives, seed producers, aggregators, traders and processors) in the Pulses and Oil Crops value chain. In addition, the Pulses and Oil Crops Program collaborates with other researchers, NGOs and CGIAR centers in grant proposal writing, capacity building and germoplasm exchange. The program activities are spread across the low, mid & high altitude agro-ecologies of the country.

In this area, Edouard has conducted research to unravel the benefits of organic and inorganic fertilizers in enhancing biological nitrogen fixation and yields of bean and soybean in the smallholder farming systems of Rwanda. He has contributed in identification, isolation and authentication of indigenous Rhizobium strains that are currently being compared with exotic strains that were only available to farmers in Rwanda.

Edouard has attended several international conferences and workshops and participated in a quite number of trainings and was awarded certificates. He is actively involved in organizing and building up the capacity of actors involved in the value chain of pulses and oil crops as well as building the partnership with local and international organizations.
