The Digital ID registration and photo-taking exercise has started. You may be wondering: Who is required to be photographed to receive a Digital ID, and what should you bring when you go for registration and photo-taking?

WHO SHOULD REGISTER FOR A DIGITAL ID AND WHAT SHOULD THEY BRING?

The people required to verify their information and have their photographs taken to obtain a Digital ID include all Rwandan citizens, from newborn children onwards; refugees and all foreigners legally residing in Rwanda; and migrants who do not have identification documents from their countries of origin. In addition, people residing in Rwanda whose nationality is unknown will also be assisted.

Let us look at what a Rwandan citizen should bring when going to have their photograph taken to obtain a Digital ID.

First, anyone registering for the Digital ID must review, correct where necessary, and confirm their personal information before having their photograph taken.

Checking your information is simple. Type “AMAKURU”, leave a space, then enter your National ID number, and send the SMS to 3500. You will receive a message showing the information under which you are registered in the NIDA system.

If you find that your information is correct, you can confirm it through www.irembo.gov.rw by selecting “Kwemeza Imyirondoro y’Indangamuntu Koranabuhanga y’Umuntu Ku Giti Cye” (confirming an individual’s Digital ID information) or “Kwemeza Imyirondoro y’Abishingiwe” (confirming the information of dependants), where the person being confirmed is under 16 years old. You can also use this service to request corrections where necessary.

Alternatively, you can verify your information at the designated photo-taking site by bringing an identification document.

What Should You Bring?

When going to verify your information and have your photograph taken for a Digital ID, you should bring:

• Your National ID or your National ID number if you have lost the physical ID.
• Your parents’ National ID numbers, if they have the current National IDs.
• Your spouse’s National ID number, if you are legally married.
• Your civil registration number, for children who have not yet obtained a National ID.

If you review your information and find an error, you can request a correction from the civil registrar at the nearest sector office or at NIDA, bringing supporting documents that prove the correct information.
