Muhanga Station

Muhanga Station is one of 13 RAB’s Stations of Research and Extension activities. It is located in Southern Province, Muhanga District, Muhanga Sector, Nganzo Cell.  It covers Muhanga, Kamonyi and Ruhango Districts.

Muhanga Station, carries out a variety of Research and Extension activities which are executed by different programs/projects such as:

1. Monogastric:

  • Pig genetic improvement using various breeds, namely DUROC, PIETRAIN, LANDRACE, LARGEWHITE & CAMBROUGH;
  • Research on pig breed performance and maintain pure breed on the Station;
  • Feeding and feeds compounding for Monogastric by use of Black soldier flies, potato vines, leguminous plants and fodder trees;
  • Capacity building for various Stakeholders visiting the Station;
  • Poultry improvement of genetical potential and indigenous conservation based on its progress
  • Research on performance of broiler fed Black soldier flies;
  • Establishing an elite flock of improved chickens for multiplication and dissemination through nucleus breeding programs

2. Root and Tubers(Cassava):

  • Improving cassava crop varieties and integrated management technologies development and dissemination
  • Early generation seeds(EGS) production and distribution
  • Roots and tubers(cassava): Effective extension services establishment and implementation

3. Banana:

  • Banana rehabilitation
  • Banana Xanthomonas wilt (BXW) control & other banana pests and diseases management
  • Establishment of banana demo plots
  • Seed production and multiplication  (Rice and Maize, Soybean, Bean, Tree tomato, Passion fruit and Vegetables, etc);
  • Ruminant seed production;
  • Natural Resources management through irrigation technology such as Small scale irrigation and large scale irrigation.

All activities are worked in 3 districts covered by Muhanga Station and in 2 respective sites namely Muhanga and Mututu which is located in Nyanza district.
