Decades of dedication to bean research and development have earned Mr. Edouard Murwanashyaka, Senior Research Technician at the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), recognition during the PABRA 30th Anniversary celebrations.

Based at Rwerere Station, Murwanashyaka has built a career around bean breeding, seed systems development and the promotion of improved varieties—work that has contributed to strengthening Rwanda’s bean sector and expanding farmers’ access to quality planting materials.

From Research to Farmers’ Fields

A key part of his contribution has been his technical involvement in the breeding and development of improved climbing bean varieties suited to Rwanda’s production conditions and farmers’ needs.

Through the selection, evaluation and multiplication of promising materials, as well as support for the dissemination of improved varieties, his work has helped bridge the gap between research and farmers’ fields.

His contribution forms part of RAB’s broader efforts to increase bean productivity, strengthen seed systems and support farmers with improved technologies.

Three Decades of Bean Research

The recognition came during celebrations marking 30 years of the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA), which brought together partners who have contributed to advancing bean research and development across Africa.

Rwanda, through RAB and its predecessor institutions, has been an active partner in PABRA, contributing to the development and dissemination of improved bean technologies adapted to local production environments.

Murwanashyaka’s recognition reflects not only his individual contribution but also the value of sustained technical expertise and collaboration in advancing agricultural research.
