RAB distributes purebred rabbits to model farmers
On August 29, 2023, the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) initiated an activity to revitalize the local rabbit populations. The activity commenced with an event held at Mulindi in Gasabo District, during which 48 rabbits of distinguished breeds, including Flemish, Chinchilla, and New Zealand, among others, were distributed to 9 exemplary farmers. These farmers had been selected after meeting stringent requirements.
Addressing the farmers, Dr. Solange UWITUZE, Deputy Director-General in charge of Animal Resources Development at RAB, emphasized the paramount importance of employing good breeding techniques. Additionally, she fervently urged the farmers to adopt strategic business approaches as essential means to ensure success.
The event concluded with the signing of an agreement that mandates farmers to prioritize the well-being of the breeds and collaborate with government entities to promote rabbit farming, with the ultimate goal of achieving the sustainability of the rabbit value chain.
The distribution of purebred rabbits to farmers aims to rejuvenate the local rabbit populations, sustain the rabbit value chain, and elevate rabbit farming into a viable business.
