RAB and CRS Collaborate to Enhance Nutrition through Crop Processing Training
Huye District, August 14, 2024 – In a concerted effort to combat malnutrition and promote the use of nutrient-rich crops across Rwanda, the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rwanda Chapter, has successfully concluded a two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) on the processing of nutritious crops.
This training, held at RAB Rubona in Huye District, brought together 158 participants from 13 districts, including Ngoma, Kayonza, Rwamagana, Rulindo, Burera, Nyabihu, Nyamasheke, Musanze, Rubavu, Ngororero, Rutsiro, Karongi, and Rusizi. The participants, who are government staff such as district-level health directors, hospital nutritionists, and health center personnel, are being equipped with vital skills and knowledge to enhance food processing and conservation techniques. The ultimate goal is to reach a total of 259 individuals, ensuring that the impact of this initiative extends across the country.
The training sessions are structured to provide an immersive learning experience, with participants convening in two separate groups. The focus is on the processing, conservation, and preparation of nutrient-dense foods, emphasizing techniques that preserve their nutritional value.
Central to this training is the need to equip participants with the ability to process a variety of nutritious crops, including vegetables like carrots and beetroots, high-iron beans, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, soybeans, eggs, and small fish. The program also seeks to raise awareness about the importance of nutritious foods for overall health and well-being. Participants are gaining practical knowledge and hands-on experience in preparing various recipes that utilize these nutrient-dense foods, ensuring they can apply these techniques in their communities.
This collaboration between RAB and CRS represents a significant step towards reducing malnutrition in Rwanda. By empowering local health professionals with the necessary tools and knowledge, the initiative aims to foster widespread adoption of nutrient-rich crops, thereby enhancing the health and well-being of the nation.
