PM Launches the 2027A Agricultural Season in Rulindo as Farmers Target Higher Yields

On 10 October 2026 — From harvesting 2 tonnes of maize per hectare to achieving 6 tonnes, farmers organised under KOYAKIRU Cooperative in Rulindo District are building on their progress with a new target: 8 tonnes per hectare.

Their ambition was highlighted at Nyarububa Marshland, which covers more than 97 hectares, where maize planting marked the launch of Rwanda’s 2027A agricultural season. The event brought together Prime Minister Dr Justin Nsengiyumva, other government officials, farmers and local residents.

Building on the gains

For KOYAKIRU Cooperative, the increase in maize yields from 2 to 6 tonnes per hectare marks an important step forward. Farmers are now looking to build on these gains as they begin a new growing season.

Their target of 8 tonnes per hectare reflects their determination to achieve better harvests through continued efforts and effective use of available agricultural land.

PM calls for proper maintenance of farming infrastructure

During the launch, Prime Minister Dr Justin Nsengiyumva encouraged farmers to increase production and properly maintain farming infrastructure, emphasising the importance of both in supporting sustainable agricultural development.

For farmers cultivating marshlands, well-maintained infrastructure is essential to supporting farming operations and protecting investments in agricultural land.

Looking ahead to the new season

As maize planting begins at Nyarububa, farmers face the task of translating their ambitions into results. For KOYAKIRU Cooperative, the next milestone is to move from 6 to 8 tonnes of maize per hectare.

The launch of the 2027A agricultural season highlights the importance of collaboration among farmers, cooperatives and government institutions in advancing agricultural development and supporting more productive farming communities.
