KWIBUKA30: RAB COMMEMORATES FORMER EMPLOYEES KILLED IN THE 1994 GENOCIDE AGAINST THE TUTSI
On April 27, 2024, the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) held an event to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The event aimed to honor the employees of the former institutions merged into RAB, namely ISAR, SSS, LVNR, and CNIA, who were killed during the Genocide. It took place at RAB's headquarters in Huye District, Southern Province. Prior to the event, a night vigil was held on April 26, 2024, at the Rubona Genocide Memorial located within the headquarters' premises.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Telesphore Ndabamenye, the Director-General of RAB, highlighted the horrific nature of the Genocide in Rubona. He noted that some former leaders and employees of institutions merged into RAB, who were considered intellectuals and had previously been committed to promoting agriculture and livestock, deviated from their duties to kill their colleagues.
"We at RAB lost intellectuals, infrastructure was destroyed, and unity was shattered, despite it being the foundation of everything," he added. "The RAB community is committed to upholding unity, cooperation, transparency, and accountability, as mandated by the government of Rwanda," he concluded.
Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr. Ildephonse Musafiri, the guest of honor at the event, emphasized the importance of confronting the deep wounds of the 1994 Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi. He praised the RPF-Inkotanyi fighters who stopped the Genocide and the leadership of His Excellency Paul Kagame, which has transformed Rwandans into a nation where ethnicity is no longer a dividing factor, and people proudly identify as Rwandans.
He concluded by urging survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994 to remain courageous during these challenging times. He said, "Let us take courage; Rwanda will never perish again. Today, we remember those who perished, including our loved ones, and pay tribute to all others laid to rest in different Genocide memorials with our heartfelt rest in peace wishes."
The event concluded with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Rubona Genocide Memorial, which serves as the resting place of victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
